What is International SMS?
SMS (Short Messaging Service) is a service with which you can send text messages beyond the boundaries of domestic and overseas mobile carriers using a mobile phone number as a messaging address.
It is used around the world as a means of mobile communication that is affordable, fast and simple. Sending messages to phones overseas is called international SMS messaging.
SMS services in Japan
In Japan SMS is called “Short Mail” by NTT docomo, “C-mail” by au and “SMS” by SoftBank and EMOBIL. It can only be sent and received between mobile phones of the same carrier (as of October 1, 2009). NTT docomo, SoftBank and EMOBIL recently began an International SMS service for 3G mobile phones, but service rates are still high and the service is not as widely used as in other countries.
As you know, e-mailing is the primary mode of mobile messaging in Japan. So long as you know the recipient's e-mail address, you can send a message regardless of their carrier. It's possible to send messages from your personal computer as well.
So then, can't you send email to mobile phones overseas?

Because in other countries SMS messaging is affordable even among separate domestic carriers, it is the most popular means for messaging between mobile phones. On the other hand, packet charges are still high and few carriers provide a flat-rate service at an affordable rate like in Japan.
For this reason, connecting to the Internet or e-mailing with a mobile phone is not as widespread as it is in Japan. In addition, even users whose mobile phones are email and internet-ready rarely subscribe to an Internet access plan.
For this reason, if you try to send an email to a phone overseas you are often unable to since the overseas user often has no email address.
